The famous New Orleans po-boy sandwich was invented during the late 1920’s during a streetcar strike. The Martin Brothers on St Claude Avenue created a very inexpensive sandwich on French Bread with scraps of roast beef and gravy for the unemployed workers. The cheapest version was French Fries, mayonnaise and French bread. For a couple of cents extra you could get it “dressed”…with lettuce, pickles and tomatoes.
Today the sandwich is sold all over town..on the unique French bread that made it famous and it is still a bargain.
